Hey, humans, keep us safe and happy! OK?
      We hate fireworks! Loud noises, flashing lights, and smell of sulfur can cause excessive fear in animals. We tremble, whimper, and pant, and it is so distressful we want to run away from it. Sometimes we get so frightened we might run through glass windows, or escape from the yard, and maybe get hit by a car.

Greyhounds are the second fastest animals in the world
      Greyhound Lifesavers Inc. is a 501©3 nonprofit group established in 2002 by Judy Horton. The headquarters is in Lexington, S.C., but the group places retired racing greyhounds in loving homes across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. The organization has over 100 members and is governed by a board of directors elected by the general membership.

Greyhound fun facts
      • The greyhound breed is over 4,000 years old. They were bred in Egypt to catch rabbits eating the wheat and corn crops and are very good hunters. • Greyhounds are the second fastest animal on earth! Only the cheetah is faster. Always walk a greyhound on a leash unless in a fenced in area. They can reach speeds of up to 45 mph in three to four steps.

S.C. chaplain becomes commandant of U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School
      Chaplain Sam Boone from Bennettsville, S.C., is the new commandant for The United States Chaplain Center and School at Fort Jackson, S.C. He was sworn in June 24, 2008, at the MG Robert B. Solomon Center at Fort Jackson. He replaces Chaplain (Colonel) Clarke L. McGriff of North Carolina.

      While I Breathe I Hope started as a doctoral project of three USC Psychology students specializing in the field of community clinical psychology. It has grown into a grassroots effort supported by many members of the Columbia community to communicate and support the needs of the homeless population in our city.

City of Columbia partners with First Citizens to create bike-friendly community
      The city of Columbia and First Citizens Bank have partnered to provide bicyclists new places to park and meet the need of residents who are seeking an alternative to driving their cars. First Citizens will install bicycle racks at three Columbia locations: 1230 Main Street (downtown), 3932 Forest Drive (city of Forest Acres), and 2600 Rosewood Drive (community of Rosewood).

International Young Eagles celebrate in Columbia skies
      Trip Gregory introduces some young eagles to the aircraft before a flight. Dozens of experimental Aircraft Association volunteer pilots rolled out of bed early, footed the bills for gassing up their own planes, and drew upon years of flying experience last weekend when they took off from Owens Downtown Airport to give 125 youngsters a taste of adventure in the air.

MTC offers new merit admissions in health sciences
      Starting this fall, Midlands Technical College is introducing three new Health Science merit admissions opportunities for qualified MTC students in the Dental Hygiene, Radiologic Technology, and Respiratory Care programs. MTC has had merit admissions opportunities for qualified MTC Nursing students since 2005.
