Schools honored for outstanding writing programs
      Eight South Carolina public schools are being honored as winners of the prestigious Exemplary Writing Program Awards. The eight schools were selected by State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex after a comprehensive five- month evaluation that included site visits.

Columbia High Student named Pre- Engineering Scholar
      Charles Zachary Christie, a 2008 graduate of Columbia High School, has been named a Pre- engineering Scholar by the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering. Also, Charles received a $1,500 scholarship that he will use toward his study of mechanical engineering at the University of South Carolina, where he plans to enroll this fall.

Spring Valley student wins National Young Astronomer Award
      John Hodge II, a graduate of Spring Valley High School, is the 2008 winner of the National Young Astronomer Award given by the Astronomical League. His research project was entitled "Light Curve Analysis of Cataclysmic Variable Star Systems: Cam Var 06, FS Aur. HT Cas, IP Peg. and EQ Aqr.

      The Junior Scientists of Forest Heights Elementary School were named 2008 overall Champions of the Environment by S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. They received $2,500. The second runner- up was Blythewood High School, which took home $1000.
