Rotary gives Riverwalk benches
Lisa Ingram, president of Cayce/West Columbia Rotary Club, called a meeting June 3 for the dedication of park benches for the Cayce and West Columbia Riverwalk.
The money raised to pay for the donation of the park benches was done so through the Rotary Rocks Concert, which is scheduled for October 24, 2008. Revenue raised by the club is also used for various other beautification and community projects.
West Columbia Mayor Bobby Horton, after thanking the group, highlighted a number of benefits of the Cayce/ West Columbia area and, most importantly, the river itself.
In the last couple of years, American Rivers, a national non- profit conservation organization dedicated to protecting and restoring healthy natural rivers, designated the region the very first "3 Rivers."
Horton said activities and events are scheduled to take advantage of the potential of the area. Horton reminded everyone the 6th Annual Rhythm on the River Concert Series continues through the month of June on Saturday's from 6- 9 pm at the West Columbia Amphitheater beside the Gervais Street Bridge.
Cayce City Manager John Sharpe thanked the group for their generous donation and reminded everyone many people in the community still do not know that the Riverwalk and various public shelters along the way are there. They are always available free of charge for use on a first come, first serve basis.
Sharpe also told the group of the 2008 City of Cayce Congaree Bluegrass Festival scheduled for October 4, 2008. Five bluegrass bands will perform at Granby Gardens Park by Cayce City Hall.
