On Tuesday May 20 Gov. Mark Sanford signed a proclamation declaring May Better Speech and Hearing month in South Carolina. Sanford indicated speech and hearing services for children were important to him because "Our number three son received some speech help for problems with some of his sounds. I think it was an r problem."

Present at the signing was a delegation from the South Carolina Speech and Hearing Association. The delegation included 2008 SCSHA ambassador Jay Price; his sister Anna; his parents Scott and Robin Price; SCSHA president Dr. Leigh Ann Spell; Dr. Regina Lemmon, SCSHA vice president for education and information; Dr. Cheryl Rogers and Dianne Dixon from the USC Speech and Hearing research center.

The delegation was joined by representative Skipper Perry. The purpose of the resolution was to draw attention and support for programs providing services to individuals with speech and hearing disorders.
