John Sherrer of the Historic Columbia Foundation happily explains to his 25 eager tourists in Melrose Heights the importance of the Powell home behind him. One of Columbia's historic neighborhoods, Melrose Heights, was the site of a guided tour Saturday, May 17 by John Sherrer of the Historic Columbia Foundation. The early suburb of Columbia was established by the Powell family soon after 1900. The plan for Melrose, named for the Powell farm, followed the Columbia grid plan. The main boundaries were Woodrow Street on the west, Gervais and Trenholm on the north, Millwood on the south, and Butler on the east.
