Healthy Learners, an organization that works to provide access to health care for uninsured and underinsured children in S.C., recently honored Carolyn Duff, RN, school nurse at A.C. Moore Elementary, as the recipient of its 2008 Dee Dee Chewning Healing Award.

Healthy Learners, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, was established in 1992 to help alleviate health- related barriers to learning among economically disadvantaged children. The four Healthy Learners programs in S.C. serve 109 schools in seven school districts, including Richland One.

The Dee Dee Chewning Healing Award recognizes an individual who provides direct care to children served by Healthy Learners and goes "above and beyond" to support and promote the goals and objectives of the program. The award was presented to Duff during a March 18 luncheon at Seawell's in Columbia.

Duff is a former State School Nurse of the Year and former Richland One Classified Employee of the Year.
