Volunteers give students much more than their time

More than 3,000 parents, college students, business people, grandparents and ordinary citizens give to Richland One students every day as volunteers, mentors, Lunch Buddies and tutors. On March 7, the district recognized its most outstanding volunteers at a breakfast in their honor.

2008 Richland One Volunteers of the Year

• Volunteer of the Year is Floyd Bullock, W.A. Perry Middle School.

• Volunteer Group of the Year is Satchel Ford Fine Arts Steering Committee, Satchel Ford Elementary School.

• Sam Hopkins Volunteer Administrator of the Year is Satchel Ford Elementary teacher Mary Mallick (award recognizes a paid staff person who coordinates his/her school volunteer program).

In addition to attending football games, PTA meetings and after- school events, Bullock is described by school staff as someone who "has helped shape the character of his students and demonstrates what a man, father or mentor should be." • Partner of the Year - St. Andrews Baptist Church, H.B. Rhame Elementary School (award recognizes a business or community group that has made significant contributions to a school).

• Elementary School Volunteer with the Most Hours - Deborah Saunders, Pine Grove Elementary (2,500 hours)

• Middle School Volunteer with the Most Hours is Arlington Snyder, Gibbes Middle School (900 hours)

• High School Volunteer with the Most Hours is Sheila Mazyck, Lower Richland High School (1,500 hours).
