The Columbia Fire Department presented Ben Risher and his best friend R. Paul Perry III with The Citizens Medal of Honor and a plaque February 23, 2008, at Seawells during the Columbia Fire Department's third annual awards ceremony. Humane society rescues 23 horses and 6 dogs

The Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (HSPCA) seized 23 horses, mostly Arabian, from a pasture in Eastover, S.C. HSPCA Investigators and Richland County Sheriff Department Deputies found no traces of food in the pasture or in any of the free standing buildings located on the rented property.
