Midlands Technical College has added four new certificates in the Architectural Engineering Technology (AET) program for spring 2008. The new certificates are Environmental and Economic Design, Architectural Computer Graphics, Architectural Design Technology, and Architectural Systems and Codes. The certificate programs are open to qualified applicants of various skill and experience levels, from beginning students to senior technicians, depending on the program.

These certificates, which are each two- semester programs, were created to allow students to gain in- demand job skills in a short time frame. The new certificates allow students to get efficient job training that employers require, while at the same time accumulating credits that can quickly equal the degree requirement.

One of the new certificates, Environmental and Economic Design, is a 21- credit- hour program that addresses the fundamentals of energy efficient and environmentally friendly design methodology. This certificate is designed both for the student nearing completion of the AET degree and senior technicians interested in this ever-expanding part of architectural engineering technology.

The new Architectural Computer Graphics Certificate is a 21- credit- hour program that addresses the basics of architectural drafting and the fundamentals of computer aided design and project management. This certificate is designed both for students needing a basic introduction to architectural drafting and those who intend to pursue a degree in AET.

Another certificate, Architectural Design Technology, is also 21-credit-hour program. The certificate program addresses the basics of architectural design methodology. It covers the fundamentals of computer aided design, project management, and building systems and codes. This certificate is designed both for students needing a basic introduction to architectural engineering and those who intend to pursue a degree in AET.

The fourth new certificate is Architectural Systems and Codes, which is a 22-credithour program. It addresses the basics of architectural systems and the concept of designing to code. The program covers fundamentals of computer aided design and building systems and codes. This certificate is designed both for students needing a basic introduction to architectural engineering technology and those who intend to pursue a degree in AET.

The AET program and certificates provide a broad education for employment in the construction industry, in architectural and engineering firms, or in allied fields. The program and certificates are designed to help meet the need for qualified architectural engineering technicians in the Midlands and surrounding areas.

Students are eligible to enroll in the new AET certificate programs only after the AET program entry requirements are completed and prerequisites for individual courses within the certificates are met. The AET programs and certificates are offered at MTC's Beltline Campus. For more information on the AET degree programs or certificates, contact Michelle Eargle at (803) 738-7747.
