He was an Air Force fighter pilot in Europe during WWII, 1944-45; received Decorated Distinguished Flying Cross, two Purple Hearts, Air Medal nine times, three Battle Stars, and a Presidential Citation. In 1965, he became a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives. He has served in the S. C. Senate since 1967; and is the last WWII veteran serving in the Legislature. The Hon. Sen. The City of Columbia in coordination with the Columbia Action Council, invite the public to come out and salute American's Veterans at the Annual Veterans Day Parade in Columbia Monday, November 12, 2007.

The parade will begin at 11 am on Sumter Street and will feature more than 1,000 participants, including Veterans, dignitaries, elected officials, local school bands, military units, Junior ROTC units, emergency personnel, equipment, and more! A Memorial Ceremony will be held to pause and think about the true cost of war and those who have paid the price for all that the United- States holds so dear.

This year the parade marshal will be The Hon. Sen. John Drummond.
