Citius, Altius, Fortius. The Olympic motto of "Swifter, Higher, Stronger" applied Friday night, October 19 to the Wilson Hall Barons. Facing an undermanned Cardinal Newman team, the Barons scored on seven of their nine possessions en route to a 48- 7 win over the Cardinals.

The Barons (9- 0) were led by quarterback Ansel Owens, who set the tone for the game early by scoring on a 24- yard run early in the first quarter. Owens also completed five of nine passes for 103 yards and three touchdowns. The Baron running game was also in full effect, gaining 192 of Wilson Hall's 301 total yards on the ground.

After Owens' touchdown, the Cardinal offense settled down and engineered an 11- play, 65- yard drive for a touchdown, the final 24 coming on a pass from senior Jones Brown, in his last home game, to junior Michael Bolchoz. The Cardinals (3- 6) converted one third- down and two fourth- down plays to keep the drive going. After the extra point, the score was tied at 7.

However, from that point the Barons took over. Wilson Hall scored the next three times they had the ball, including a run by Austin Boyle and passes from Owens to Tom Durant and Brent Klapthor, the latter coming after senior Davis Boyle blocked a Cardinal punt. The Baron defense throttled Cardinal Newman, sacking Brown five times and limiting the Cardinals to 13 yards net rushing for the game.

Even when Cardinal Newman stopped the Barons, they could get nothing going. On Wilson Hall's first possession of the second half, Owens threw an interception to senior Brandon Hall, who returned it 37 yards to the Baron 30. The Cardinals could not contain the Baron defensive line, who hurried Brown into a pick of his own, and Wilson Hall scored on the ensuing drive, Owens connecting again with Klapthor. Davis Boyle later added a 32- yard fumble return in the third quarter to completely ice the game.

Wilson Hall takes their undefeated record into their final home game against Pinewood Prep October 26. Cardinal Newman will travel across town to Heathwood for their final game.

It was Homecoming for Cardinal Newman Friday night. Samantha August was crowned homecoming queen, and Sarah Shull was selected as Miss Sweetheart by the football players.
