      Richland School District One, the Richland County Public Library and the South Carolina State Museum co-sponsored the October 3 visit by world renowned astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson who met with hundreds of middle school students from across the Midlands at the Koger Center.

Richland One first in space missions

      Richland One's Challenger Learning Center was recognized as a leader among the 48 such institutions throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Korea. The local Challenger Center ranked first internationally in simulating the most space missions of any stand alone Challenger Learning Center associated with a school.

RNE student wins Best of Show
      Eliani Camarena (l), student in Richland Northeast High School's Palmetto Center for the Arts, won Best of Show, the top award at this year's South Carolina State Fair Student Art Exhibition. Camarena, who also is in RNE's English as a Second Language program, received $250 as part of her Best of Show award.

Charley's Backyard Stars

      As I walk outside into my dazzling, enchanted backyard, my senses go wild. I hear the birds chirping, the leaves crackling, and wind blowing crazily into my face. I smell the flowers blooming, popping out of the ground like a chick coming out of its shell. I smell the pines, their sweet smell filling the air. I feel the shiny grass, cut and fluffy.
