Choir sweeps competitions in New York

The Richland Northeast High School GAP Choir won 13 of the 17 awards presented at the Black Music Caucus's National Gospel Choir Competitions in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 23, 2007. This is the fourth year that the four- year- old group has entered this national competition, where it has consistently brought home major awards. Joyce Abel is an RNE science teacher and the group's advisor. GAP brought home trophies for Most Outstanding Male Vocalist, Andre Delaine; Most Outstanding Alto Soloist, Jasimen Williams; Most Outstanding Soprano Soloist, Jayna Martin; Most Outstanding Accompaniment: Rickey Johnson (percussionist and music director), Hamilton Grant (trombone), Alphonso Counts (saxophone), Richard Pearson, III (keyboard), and Myron Williams (bass guitar); and Most Outstanding Keyboardist, Jonathan Carmicheal.
