Publisher has insight into failing schools
      As a former educator I'd like to congratulate Warner Montgomery ("State takover will not save 'failing' schools," Feb. 23) on his insight into the real cause of failing schools. His article was the best and most insightful account that I've ever read. Thank you for an honest account of what is really happening in our society and in our schools.

Animal Protection League wants equal weight
      For the past 25 years, the Animal Protection League, the Midland's first no- kill animal shelter, has gone quietly about the business of providing a safe haven for many of our communities abandoned and unwanted pets. It has been a demanding endeavor since all funding has been from private donations, volunteer driven fundraisers, and a few small grants.

      My feet are the coldest part of my body so they don't spend a lot of time outdoors, especially during the chillier months. My feet are also the ugliest part of my body, so it's probably a good thing they spend a fair portion of the year out of public view, hidden beneath a layer of socks and shoes.

Sensitivity challenges free speech
      For the first time in several decades, I've started planning my evening around a TV show. Good Eats , starring geeky Alton Brown, comes on at 7 pm. A few evenings back, he made sushi rolls and such, using those little rice paper sheets. The show was entertaining. I didn't realize how much effort went into those things.

      Transit police in Boston are stymied by a string of robberies at stations along Bean Town's subway system. They get their first break when a robbery victim refuses to give up his cell phone. The victim grabs one of the three youthful robbers and holds him down until police arrive.

      I read with interest Temple Ligon's article, "Romney Needs to Talk Healthcare" published on 2/2/07. I am a Massachusetts resident who was shocked to find out last April the government of Mass.
