The mysterious mosaic Photo by Rachel HaynieThe mysterious mosaic Photo by Rachel Haynie As the City of Columbia continues refurbishing administrative space at Washington Square, corner of Main and Washington streets, old architectural details are coming to light. One is this mosaic mural of Columbia early in the 20th century. So far officials have been unable to determine who the artist was, according to Krista Hampton, preservation officer for the city. "Someone thought it was Ralph Waldrop," but Hampton said nothing definitive has surfaced yet. A courteous information officer just inside the Main Street entrance to Washington Square said a customer coming through the door to pay a water bill noticed the mural in a still-under-construction space and seemed to know a good bit about it, but he didn't leave his name. If anyone has information about this newly-discovered mural that had been covered over by "improvements" until just recently, please contact The Columbia Star , 771-0219 or email mimim@sc.rr.com.
