The Ariail Chapter of the Columbia College Alumnae Club held its first meeting of the 2006-2007 year September 14. Approximately 40 members and guests gathered at 10 am in Alumnae Hall on the Columbia College campus. Refreshments and a brief social time were enjoyed as the group arrived.
Serving as hostesses were Mrs. Joan Vaughan Young ('56), Mrs. Edith Collins Hause ('56), and Mrs. Marie Locker Hill, (honorary).
Mrs. Jewell Powell Hill ('60), president of the chapter, called the meeting to order, and Mrs. Sara Cook Andrews ('51), first vice president, introduced Mrs. Camille Eadon Daniel ('56) from Summerville, S.C. who presented the program.
A retired history teacher, Mrs. Daniel has written three short novels inspired by events experienced during her lifetime. She read excerpts from each and told of how she came to write them. Cassie's Point and Clam Trails are set on Lake Marion in South Carolina.
In her most recent book, Autumn Bloomers , Mrs. Daniels shares the same setting with a few of her old Columbia College classmates as they celebrate their 50th graduation reunion through an adventure that fuses fact with fiction.
Following the program, Mrs. Hill presided over the business meeting. New yearbooks were distributed, and financial as well as other business was discussed. During the meeting, members of the staff of the Development and Alumnae Offices were introduced and a brief update of the business of the College was presented. The Ariail Chapter of the Columbia College Alumnae Association was organized in 1963 and was named in honor of Dr. and Mrs. J. M. Ariail. Regular meetings are held the second Thursday of September, November, February, and April. The next scheduled meeting is Thursday, November 9, 2006.
