Columbia designer defies mainstream clothing
Delilah Knuckley, who grew up in Columbia, is a fashion designer extraordinaire of her clothing label fittingly named Demise of Samson. Knuckley's motto is, "Hold yourself accountable for what you consume."
Knuckley designs and makes her own clothes in defiance of large clothing corporations and retailers who she says use "slave labor and sweatshops because it's cheap but then neglect the human rights and well- being of their workers."
The running theme for her last few fashion shows has been consumer responsibility and awareness. She believes that one cannot truly feel comfortable and proud while wearing "a pair of shoes, knowing that someone suffered to make them." An interesting point she presents is that "The entire concept of buying clothing a relatively very new idea. For centuries, people have been making their own clothes."
Thus, applying this lesson from the past and hoping to create a trend for the future, she first started designing her own clothes for Demise of Samson in 2001. While the length of time necessary to create a piece depends on what it is, she can usually make a dress in just five minutes. For each piece, "The idea is different." The goal however remains the same: to "make anyone happy and to make them think."
Knuckley is extremely passionate about her hometown, Columbia. Though she is moving to Philadelphia, Pa., Columbia remains very close to her heart. She says, "It's the people who love this city and don't spend all their time complaining who get things done."
Knuckley's recent fashion show which took place on the notorious 6/6/06 will be aired on UPN at 12:30 am Monday, July 3rd.
