Yankees invade
On May 6 and 7, 2006, Confederate boys in gray fought against Union troops in blue on part of a 250 acre site in Sandy Run, Calhoun County. The Battle for Columbia was complete with cannons, bayonets, and horses and ended with theSouth surrendering to the North. There was also a large controlled fire on Saturday night, the Burning of Columbia.
Family groups camped out all weekend in two designated areas; either the Confederate camp or the Union camp. The tents were simple white like the average soldier would have stayed in during the Civil War.
The reenacting soldiers wore authentic style uniforms and many women and children wore period clothing.Hoop skirts, suspenders, andhair netswere common sights.
Vendors were set up in the area selling these types of clothes along with woodwork, wax candles, jewelry, and food. Music was heard from some of the tents and on Sunday morning an open air church service was held.
This particular reenactment is held annually at the same site. For more information, one can access www.battleforcolumbia.com.
