Long-time First Presbyterian Church organist Ron Miller was honored during the 6 pm Sunday evening worship service, April 30.

The 45-member Chancel Choir presented commissioned works for brass and organ by Dick Goodwin to honor the talent and recognize the first 35 years' service of their beloved organist.

"Larry Wyatt contacted me last winter and asked me to compose something special," Goodwin said. "I am always pleased when a church, or any organization, recognizes their good fortune to have someone of Ron's capabilities and finds a meaningful way to honor him and his commitment over the years. His name will be on the manuscript for all to see when, and if, the piece is done again."

Goodwin has played often at First Presbyterian Church and has attended a number of progams there. "I've admired Ron's musicality and his technique. I have always stayed to listen (and admire) if, at the end of a program, he has a postlude to play. I certainly had his hands (and feet) in mind while writing this piece. I also know all of the brass players quite well so I have written with specific folk in mind."

In addition to the Goodwin's new work, the evening's music included Te Deum in C by the British composer Edward Elgar. A special composition by USC organ professor Dr. William Bates was also premiered.

A reception honoring Ron and Retta Miller was held in Jackson Hall after the service.
