Two Royal Mute Swans come close for a bit of bread. Even before the fields of irises begin to bloom at the Sumter Swan Lake Iris Gardens there are many things to explore. The large variety of swans, ducks, and geese make for an interesting afternoon stroll. The swans were brought to the gardens from all around the world and include the Royal White Mute, Black Necked, Whooper, and Trumpeter varieties, just to name a few.

In this garden, feeding the animals is encouraged. The swans and ducks will gladly accept pieces of white bread or crackers as payment for gracing you with their presence. The garden requests that no flavored or raisin breads be fed to the animals.

Many turtles also share the waters and love to sun on the rocks and tree stumps around the pond.

The garden is split into two areas separated by Liberty Street in Sumter. A pedestrian bridge has been provided so visitors can cross safely. Admission is free to the public. For directions visit www.sumter-sc.com/VisitingUs/SwanLake.aspx or call 803-436-2640.
