Dr. and Mrs. Edward Hugh Setzer
February 18, 1956
Dr. Edward Hugh Setzer and Patricia Mealing Setzer celebrated their 50th anniversary with a party hosted by their children: Ellen Setzer Suarez and her husband, Brent Obenour, and son, Alex Suarez of Falls Church, Virginia; Ted Setzer of Hilton Head and Leigh Setzer of Atlanta on March 11, 2006 at WildeWood Country Club. Attending were four of Pat's six bridesmaids: Diddy Mealing Thompson of North Augusta, South Carolina; Katherine Knox Fowler of Morristown, Tennessee (who brought her bridesmaid's dress!); Jennene Steedly Allen of Portsmouth, Virginia; and Ellen McKellar Corbett of Greensboro, North Carolina.
Other friends from Columbia, Charleston, Augusta, Toccoa, Orlando and as far away as Australia joined them for an evening of remembering and giving thanks for good food, good luck, good health and wonderful companions.
Pat and Hugh met on a blind date for the 1953 Christmas Hop at The Citadel arranged by her college roommate, Jennene Steedly. Over their 50 year marriage they have called Atlanta; Augusta; San Antonio; Frth, Germany; Toccoa; Savannah; and now Columbia home.
Hugh served as an infantry officer in Korea and a medical officer in Germany. Later he was in the private practice of internal medicine in Toccoa and with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Augusta, Savannah, and Columbia. Since retirement in 2000, he has enjoyed easy living and filling his days with fellowship, golf and gardening.
Pat became involved in many community projects after teaching at Langley-Bath-Clearwater and North Augusta Junior High during Hugh's medical school, internship, and residency. She remains active in garden club work as a master judge, landscape design consultant, member of the Iris Garden Club of Columbia and Creative Study Club of Atlanta. She also serves as a Historic Columbia docent.
