MTC is celebrating Black History Month by exploring African Americans yesterday, today, and tomorrow. In commemoration of Black History Month, below is a listing of activities that will take place throughout February. Events are free and open to the public.
Feb. 1 and 2 –Debate Sessions: Philosophical differences of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. This thought–provoking debate will offer insightful information about how both men tried to conquer racial prejudice and inequality utilizing two extremely different approaches. The debate will be held in the Airport Student Center rm. 126 from 11 am to 1 pm on Wed., Feb. 1. At the Beltline Student Center rm. 201 from 11 am to 1 pm on Thurs., Feb. 2 there will be a debate session on the philosophical differences of W.E.B Dubois and Booker T. Washington.
Feb. 6 –10—African American Movie Week (The following movies will be played on the same days at the same time on Airport and Beltline Campuses.) Popcorn and drinks will be served.
1. Eyes on the Prize Series (Feb. 6 Series 1 – 3; 11 am – 2 pm)
2. The Rosa Parks Story (Feb. 7, 11 am – 1 pm)
3. Crash (Feb. 8, 11 am – 1 pm)
4. Moma Flora’s Family (Feb. 9, 11 am – 1 pm)
5. Eyes on the Prize Series (Feb. 10 Series 4 – 6; 11 am – 2 pm)
Feb. 14 and 16—Panel Discussion on African–American health disparities in Airport Student Center (Feb. 14, 11 am - 1 pm). Panel Discussion on Trends in Higher Education and How they Affect Black Males in Beltline Student Center (Feb. 16, 11 am – 1 pm).
Feb. 21 and 24 – “A Taste of Soul,” Black History Program and Food Festival, 11:30 am – 1 pm. The taste of soul food festival and black history program is an annual event showcasing the students’, faculty and staff cooking talents by having them prepare various kinds of soul food. This year’s program highlights will include the meaning and celebration of Kwanzaa and “Continuing the Legacy & Tradition of the Buffalo Soldiers” with an authentic Buffalo Soldier facilitating the discussion on Buffalo Soldiers and their impact on history. “A Taste of Soul” will be held in the Airport Student Center Rm. 126 on Feb. 21 and Beltline Student Center Rm. 201 on Feb. 24.
