Last week, we explored the Riverwalks of Cayce and West Columbia. This week, we’ll explore Columbia’s Riverfront Park.
The main entrance to Riverfront Park is right off Laurel Street on the eastern side of the Congaree River. At the beginning of the two and a half mile trail are the remains of the world’s first electrically operated textile mill and hydroelectric plant. It is still operating. (Source: www.ColumbiaSC.net).
The park’s trail continues from the water plant and runs alongside the Historic Columbia Canal. This part of the path is nearly level and straight, which is great for running or jogging.
The trail ends at the eastern side of the Broad River near Broad River Road, from which it is accessible. Coming from I–126, take the Greystone exit and make a right on Broad River Road. After crossing the river, look for a small sign for Riverfront Park on your left.
There are fantastic views of the Congaree River near the main entrance of Riverfront Park.
Toward this end of the park, there is a side trail that is definitely worth a look. This wooded trail runs right alongside the Broad River at some places and is quite beautiful.
Lush side trails can be found near the Broad River Road side of Riverfront Park.
