This “Cast–iron plant,” or Aspidistra elatior, is a member of the lily family and a native to China and Japan. It is a nearly indestructible evergreen herb, whether planted in pots or in the ground. Thus it is very popular. It makes small reddish flowers that are at or below ground level, so nobody really pays attention to them.
