Pat ’em on the back

One of the most important roles of government is to safeguard citizens. Firefighters serve at the frontline of public safety but unfortunately don’t always have the tools they really need to protect us. Budget shortfalls in recent years have made matters worse. But now with improving budget conditions, we need to focus on better equipping fire departments and other public safety agencies.

In visiting volunteer fire departments throughout South Carolina, I have been consistently impressed with the brave men and women who generously donate their time to protect our homes and families. A while back I gave our volunteer fire departments the coveted “Watchdog for the Taxpayers” award for the sacrificial service they provide us.

In addition to providing taxpayer savings, volunteer firefighters make huge personal sacrifices. At the very least, we should ensure they have the equipment needed to operate. Thankfully, leaders in the state legislature concur. Rep. Dan Cooper and others have pre–filed a bill to create a fund to help volunteer fire departments buy equipment. Under their proposal, departments can apply for grants from this fund to use for necessities like protective clothing, medical equipment, vehicles and other gear.

While I normally stay out of legislative issues, I think this is the right approach; therefore, I’ll make a rare exception. Rep. Cooper and the thirty-one co-sponsors of this bill should be applauded for addressing this need. They clearly understand the importance of supporting public safety agencies, and I enthusiastically endorse their efforts. After all, there’s nothing more important than protecting our homes and families.
