If taking a dip into icy lake waters seems unthinkable to you right now, then be prepared to cringe as spirited swimmers take the Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday, January 7 at Lake Carolina. Polar bears of all ages will jump at 10:30 am sharp!

The third annual Polar Bear Plunge is expected to break the current record of 75 brave souls who dared to endure the chilly waters of Lake Carolina last January.

“Participating polar bears will have an opportunity to garner some unique bragging rights for the Columbia area, a certificate to prove their bravery, and hot refreshments afterwards,” according to Bill Earle, spokesperson for the event and repeat polar bear plunger himself.

Earle gave pointers for this year’s polar bears. “Bring a robe. Keep your feet covered until the last possible moment. Bring extra towels or blankets to stand on. Wear layered, loose fitting clothes. Plunge with a friend…it’s more fun. And no diving or entering water head first.”

“Attire for the Polar Bear Plunge is swimsuit only, no T–shirt or wetsuits,” Earle added. Children and those not qualified as strong swimmers are encouraged to wear a personal floatation device. Polar bears under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian.

The Polar Bear Plunge will take place at Lake Carolina’s Sunset Park.

To register for the event or to receive more information, contact the Lake Carolina office at (803) 736-5253 or www.lakecarolina.com. Registration ends at 10:15 am on January 7. Lake Carolina is located in Northeast Columbia off Hardscrabble Road.
