Flora Honor Society inducts new members

Eighty–three candles flickered in the darkened AC Flora theater as students “held high their torches” in honor of their induction into the Zhuowei Yin chapter of the National Honor Society. With their candles raised, they promised to abide by the codes of the NHS.

The Flora juniors and seniors were chosen for the NHS based on their accomplishments in scholarship, leadership, character, and service. During the ceremony, last year’s inductees encouraged fellow students to excel in academics and be both servants and leaders in their community.

“These are some of the best kids in the school,” said Flora NHS Advisor Sally Funderburk. “They are so enthusiastic and appreciative. I gain so much from working with them.”

The NHS is a national organization that recognizes outstanding high school students. Members of the organization are also involved in service projects. Last year, AC Flora’s chapter helped develop a database of potential donors for St. Jude’s Hospital and offered after school tutoring. This year the group plans to, among other things, organize a staff recognition program for school employees who don’t usually get recognized like custodians, counselors, and bus drivers.
