Capitals complete excellent season
Stanley Taylor, the leading runner in SC, twists out of the grip of a Newberry tackler.
On the first play of the game Shrine Bowler Stanley Taylor raced untouched 39 yards through the Newberry line for a touchdown. It looked like the Columbia High Capitals were headed for a playoff win. Taylor went on to score two more TDs and rack up 164 yards, bringing his total for the year to 2,408 yards, best in the state for total yards and most touchdowns.
But Newberry had other plans. The rest of the game the Bulldogs slammed away at the Columbia tackles gaining five, seven, nine yards a play. CHS Coach Kemper Amick couldn’t stop the attack even by sending in Stanley Taylor to play outside linebacker. Newberry was relentless.
In the last five minutes of the second period, the Capitals blocked a field goal and intercepted a pass but failed to score. The first half ended 14–7, Newberry on top of the bruising game. In the third quarter both teams scored. It was 21–13, Newberry. In the closing minutes, Taylor scored but the PAT failed. Newberry closed out Columbia’s excellent season, 21–19.
