Ernest David Gibbons 1940–2005
Services for Ernest David Gibbons, 65, of Columbia and Edisto Island, were held Wednesday, October 26, 2005 at 4 pm at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with interment in the church yard.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were Donald Ray Owens, James Emerson Smith, Otto Wayne Corley, James Carlisle Harrison, Lloyd Inman Hendricks, John Matthews Stover, The Hon. Costa Michael Pleicones, Thomas Patton Adams, William Sterling Davies, Thomas Edward Orlander, and members of the St. Andrews Society of Columbia.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais Street, Suite 300, Columbia, SC 29201, or the Edisto Island Open Land Trust, P. O. Box 1, Edisto Island, SC 29438.

Mr. Gibbons died Saturday, October 22, 2005, of a heart attack at his home on Edisto Island. Born August 12, 1940, in Paget, Bermuda, he was the son of the late Ernest Frederick Gibbons and Olive Patterson Gibbons. He attended the Saltus Grammar School and graduated from Mt. St. Agnes Academy in Bermuda. He was a graduate of Palm Beach College and the University of South Carolina.
Mr. Gibbons was an officer of the Citizens and Southern National Bank for many years, leaving to enter medical management consulting. At the time of his death, he managed physicians’ relations for Providence Hospital. Although he remained a citizen of Bermuda, he served with distinction in the South Carolina Air National Guard for six years.
Mr. Gibbons was very involved in the community and brought a love of life and joy to all he met. He was chairman of the Southeastern Affiliate of the American Heart Association and served on the board of the local affiliate for many years. He was a charter member and former president of the St. Andrews Society of Columbia, a member of Forest Lake Club, The Town Club, the Cotillion, the Edisto Island Open Land Trust, and the Edisto Island Yacht Club. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral where he served on the vestry and as a chair of the every member canvas. He was also a friend and loyal supporter of Trinity Episcopal Church, Edisto Island.
Mr. Gibbons is survived by his wife of forty years, Cornelia (Nela) Danforth Gibbons; daughters and sons–in–law, Caroline Gibbons Williams and Richard Taylor Williams, MD of Columbia, and Cornelia (Nea) Gibbons McKeehan and Chad Lee McKeehan of Denver, Colorado; beloved grandsons, David Pierce Williams, Stuart Montgomery Williams, and Gordon Douglas Danforth McKeehan; brother, Howard Gordon Gibbons of Paget, Bermuda; his golden retriever, Bermuda Mango Chutney; and his many wonderful friends.
