Schneider School, which became Schneider Apartments, is being renovated by developers Ben Arnold and David Bryant. I enjoyed reading Warner Montgomery’s history of Scheider School. Although I was a Schneider student for only three years, the school made a lasting impression on me, and 50 years later I can still recall the names and faces of my classmates.

There was a glaring omission from the list of outstanding Schneider teachers in the article. A generation of Columbians began their schooling career under the nurturing and loving care of Miss Helen Roy. For many of us in that pre–daycare era,the first grade was also the first time we were away from home to any extent, and Miss Roy, in addition to being a wonderful teacher, served as a surrogate mother. I was lucky and had Miss Roy again for the second grade. My third grade teacher was Miss Van Patton, another good teacher and probably the prettiest who ever taught at Schneider.
