CPD offers assistance in Mississippi areas affected by Hurricane Katrina

As part of a multi–state, multi– agency task force, 22 officers from the Columbia Police Department have provided assistance in areas in proximity to Gulfport, MS since Saturday, September 3. Many of the local law enforcement officers in that region are trying to deal with enormous personal loss resulting from the impact of Katrina. The presence of the officers and the relief they have provided has resulted in a lifting of morale on local law enforcement personnel.

Columbia police officers have been deployed and are working multiple shifts in three different counties in an area approximately 70 miles from Gulf Port. Based from a command post in McComb City, officers are assisting in law enforcement duties in Walthall, Pike, and Amite Counties. Upon arrival, several officers were sworn in as deputies in Amite County to provide relief, and have assisted in making arrests and maintaining order.

DSS administers disaster

food assistance

As part of an effort to help recent evacuees of the Gulf, the SC Department of Social Services has issued temporary disaster relief cards. The cards look similar to the current Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards except they have the words “Disaster Benefits” printed on the card instead of a person's name.

Food retailers currently participating in the food stamp program should honor these cards as they would the regular EBT cards.

Families helping families

hurricane relief fund

Family Connection of SC supports Family Voices’ recent initiative, the Families Helping Families Hurricane Relief Fund. One hundred percent of the donated funds will be funneled to volunteer family leaders “on the ground” in the affected states.

The Centers for Disease Control has estimated there are at least 99,000 children with special health care needs in MS, 193,000 in LA, 488,000 in FL, and 152,000 in AL.  Those children, now affected by the hurricane, continue to face unique and difficult challenges, often needing specialized assistance to keep them healthy and alive. One hundred percent of the donations to the Families Helping Families fund will pay for items and services our family leaders have learned are needed – things such as anti–bacterial wipes, diapers, phone cards, medical care, cash for medications, gas and food, rent, toys, and clothing.

Donations are being taken via the Family Voices website (www.familyvoices.org) and via postal mail (2340 Alamo SE, Suite 102, Albuquerque, NM  87106).  For more information, contact Rachel Tallman, 1.888.835.5669.
