Ruth Brooks Sosbee
HORRELL HILL Ruth Brooks Sosbee, 78, died peacefully at her home on Friday, August 12, 2005. Born in Lower Richland County on November 23, 1926, she was the fifth child born to the late Eula Harmon Brooks and Drayton Kirkland Brooks. She grew up in Horrell Hill as one of nine children, attended Horrell Hill Elementary School, and was a graduate of Lower Richland High School. She was a lifelong member of Beulah Baptist Church in Horrell Hill.
In 1948, she met and married the love of her life, Herbert Daniel “Danny” Sosbee. Ruth and Danny were totally devoted to each other and to their three children for nearly 57 years. During Mr. Sosbee’s 20 years in the US Army, the family moved nine times. Wherever they lived, Mrs. Sosbee made the house a warm and inviting home, a place where the family always wanted to gather. She always decorated for holidays and prepared many, many sumptuous family meals.
In Mrs. Sosbee’s final years, her husband was a loyal and untiring caregiver, daily administering the nursing care she needed. She thrived under his care and looked forward to the day she could once again take over some of the household duties.
Besides her loving and devoted husband, Mrs. Sosbee is survived by her daughter, Linda Sosbee and her husband, Warner Montgomery; her daughter, Donna Sosbee; her son, Danny Sosbee and his wife, Sharon; four grandchildren, Trey Sosbee and his fiancee, Margie Demeter, Chad Sosbee and his wife, Stephanie, Megan Sosbee, and Daniel Sosbee; great–grandchildren, Madison Sosbee and Cameron Sosbee; two loving granddogs, Gorby Montbee and Pepper Sosbee; and lifelong friends, June and Max Dunson of Sumter.
Mrs. Sosbee is also survived by her sister, Lou Brooks of Columbia; and brothers, Charles Brooks, Mason Brooks, and Pete Brooks, all of Horrell Hill and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Hattie Byrd Brooks Smith Hamer, Mary Kate Brooks Polson, Barbara Brooks Whitener, and brother, Drayton Kirkland Brooks, Jr., all of Horrell Hill.
Funeral services were Monday at 1 pm at Beulah Baptist Church, Horrell Hill, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation was 6–8 pm Sunday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
