Office of Aging gives $52,900 to Capitol Senior Center
Lt. Governor André Bauer’s Office on Aging announced the Capitol Senior Center in near downtown Columbia will receive a $52,900 state grant to help with renovations and improvements. Senior centers in eight SC communities will share in a $1.9 million package of state assistance that will be distributed to support construction and renovation efforts statewide.
“The services and programs these centers provide make a positive impact and help create many opportunities to improve the quality of life of seniors and their families in those communities,” said Bauer.
The Capitol Senior Center provides services such as health and wellness programming, exercise classes, nutrition, and other services to more than 800 seniors in the Columbia area, and Center leaders expect that number to grow.
Numerous studies have shown the positive impact these kinds of activities have on the physical and mental well being of senior adults. The funding provided by the Lt. Governor’s Office on Aging grant, along with matching funds from other sources, will allow the Capitol Senior Center to meet the growing demand for these types of services and expand their current list of classes and workshops. South Carolina’s senior population is expected to double over the next two decades.
