Genealogy workshop to be held this weekend
What Civil War records have in store for those researching their family genealogy will be introduced during a workshop this Saturday at the SC History Center.
Sponsored by the SC Archives & History Foundation, the 2nd Saturday workshop, Using Civil War Records in Your Genealogical Research, will be led by reference archivist Patrick McCauley.
Available resources will be introduced and search skills suggested. Following a box lunch, participants may go to the Search Room and put into practice what they have learned, with the help of professional archivists.
Neill Rose, president of the SC Living History Association, said the resources at the history center have helped advance his knowledge of the Civil War period and can help others, too, regardless of their area of inquiry.
“The Archives has boxes of ordnance, quartermaster, and treasury documents that are invaluable to anyone trying to understand Confederate industry. I still haven’t gotten all the way through them,” Rose said. “The Archives’ reference library has been a great boon to me and others serious about living history.”
The workshop will begin at 10 am Saturday, August 13. Cost of registration includes all materials and a box lunch in an informal setting that lends itself to idea and information sharing with other participants.
Registration for Foundation members is $15; non–members, $25. You may join Saturday morning; dues are $25, and there are numerous member benefits. Contact Anne West at 896-6246 to register.
