Maui lassos the sun.
Maui lassos the sun.

According to Hawaiian legend, Maui was a heroic demi–god who fished the islands from the sea. He is said to be responsible for the long days of summer and short days of winter.

It is said that Maui’s mother wished for longer days, so he left his home on the Big Island to visit Haleakala, the House of the Sun (in Hawaiian hale– house, aka–of the, and la– sun).

He knew that the sun slept in the crater, so he wove a strong lasso out of coconut fiber. He waited for the sun to wake up and snared him with the lasso.

The sun agreed to move slowly for six months of the year and at his own pace for the other six months.
