Letter to the editor Fallout or Revolt? (Taxing Us out of our homes)

2005-06-24 / Opinion/Crime

In the wake of the Wall Street Journal article on Property Taxes (Hitting the Roof – Ray A. Smith 06/08/05) there has been a groundswell of interest in the STOPTAX.org agenda.

I’ve been getting calls from far and wide, north to south, and from east to west. There is hardly a corner of the nation where the STOPTAX.org agenda of real home ownership has not struck a passionate chord. Whether it is tax weary homeowners in Massachusetts, Oregon, North Carolina, Florida, or Washington state, the refrain is the same “They [property taxes] are killing us; how can we start an organization in our state?”

Most surprising are the calls from California, the home of Proposition 13. I guess they are suffering a case of 20–20 hindsight and they want to know how to get real protection for their homes in the long term. STOPTAX.org is promoting tax reform, total elimination of property taxes on primary residences, not tax relief.

When asked, “Nationally, do you think this is a matter of small scale fallout or a full fledged revolt?” I tell them,“Given the emotions of these callers, I say revolt, but then it may depend on whether you are a taxer or a taxee.”
