There is a new organization in SC whose sole purpose is to help over 51,000 citizens in our state who need assistance reading and processing standard print. That organization is Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D).

According to state director, Libby Anne Inabinet, “RFB&D is a national nonprofit, founded in 1948, but brand new to SC. We are the nation’s educational library serving those who have difficulty reading and processing standard print. The number of people who can benefit from RFB&D’s services in SC will grow as more statistics and data from the State Department of Education and other sources are compiled. We serve anyone who has a documented print disability. So, we not only serve students from preschool to post graduate school, but the blind and senior citizen community as well.”

Anne T. Macdonald founded RFB&D in 1948 in an effort to assist American veterans who came back from war visually impaired. Over the years, the organization has evolved to meet the ever growing and changing needs of people all over the world. RFB&D enlists the help of more than 5,800 volunteers. In 2004, these dedicated individuals added 4,627 recorded titles to the CV Starr Learning Through Listening Library.

Currently, the goal for RFB&D in SC is to spread the word about its services and initiatives to further its mission of helping people overcome obstacles presented by reading disabilities. RFB&D welcomes volunteers seeking an opportunity to help people with print disabilities.

The cause is near and dear to Inabinet, a former teacher, reading specialist, and active community volunteer. She is enthusiastic about the opportunities to help SC’s citizens better their lives through the power of reading.
