Post 6 off to a fast start with CNE close behind
When the lights went out at Heathwood Hall’s baseball field this past Monday, June 3, Richland Post 6 appeared to be gliding to an easy win. In the bottom of the eighth inning a power outage killed the lights with Post 6 holding a commanding 7–2 lead over Columbia Northeast Post 182 (CNE).
Tentatively, the suspended game will be completed when the two squads meet at Heathwood prior to the regularly scheduled contest on Friday, July 1.
Entering Monday’s clash, Post 6 had reeled off three consecutive wins giving up two runs. When Monday’s game was halted Post 6 had outscored all competitors 22–4.
“We’re throwing the ball pretty well and are playing pretty good defense,“ said Coach Ray Derrick. “We could be swinging the bats better than what we’re doing.”
Derrick chose to use mainly a reserve–starting lineup Monday giving everyone a chance to get playing time.
“If we can continue playing like that, moving our guys around with timely hitting and pitching like that, we’ll be OK,” Derrick added.
Recapping the first four outings, following the opening win over Lexington, and the rain postponement of a scheduled battle with Cayce Post 130, Post 6’s record was 3–0. Friday night at Airport High, pitcher Robbie Wilcox stopped West Columbia Post 179. Combined with the hitting of Mike Regan and Will Lewis, both with a pair of hits, Post 6 won 1–0.
Wednesday’s game postponement at Brookland-Cayce was the result of unplayable field conditions. The contest began in a drizzle that persisted after a late afternoon shower. In the top of the first inning, and trailing 6–0, the Cayce pitcher complained that the mound’s slippery condition was causing problems. With no water absorbent drying compound available, umpire–in–chief, Teddy Weeks, made the decision to call the game.
Saturday’s makeup game with Cayce resulted in a 7–1 win for Post 6. Spencer Derrick had a perfect night at the plate with a 3–for–3 hitting performance and Regan, who had a grand slam in the curtain raiser with Lexington on June 6, collected two more hits in five plate appearances. The winning hurler was Chachare Freeman.
Starting the week of June 13, Halligan, Wilcox, and Freeman had each notched a win.
Post 6 will play West Columbia at Spring Valley High School Friday night at 7 pm.
Columbia Northeast’s record stood at 2–1 before June 13’s encounter. Their most recent confrontation was with West Columbia, a 15–4 victory for CNE.
Up 2–0, CNE saw their lead vanish in the bottom of the second. Aided by two hits, two walks, and two errors WC took a 4–0 lead. After that, it was all CNE. The big inning was the third when Coach Phil Newsom’s team tallied five runs.
Pitcher Matt Branham won for the second time in as many games and CNE stood at 2–1.
CNE’s next game is scheduled against Irmo at Dutch Fork High School Friday evening, June 17.
