Elkins has taken her challenge very seriously. “I found that working on this project brought me new pride as far as being a woman. I learned so much, and the whole experience was rewarding,” said Elkins, a past Verner Award recipient.
By capturing on canvas the essence of the six local women Elkins connected with the spirit of the celebration and with the 68 American women whose portraits, from the Smithsonian’s traveling exhibition, are part of the larger show.

“Eleanor Roosevelt was among my favorites,” Elkins said. “She compared a woman to a tea bag---‘You never know what they are made of until they get into hot water!’ Another one was CoCo Chanel. ‘There is a time for work and a time for love. After that there is no more time.’”
Elkins’ individual paintings, presented as one piece of art, will be shown along with the works of Columbia College students who have created portraits of the honored women. These new pieces will remain on view until July 10, 2005.
