Adoption advocate quests for knowledge
When Denise Hoppenhauer was preparing to adopt her first child, a three–year–old Russian girl, Hoppenhauer had many questions and few answers.
One question Hoppenhauer had was what size shoes would her new daughter wear? To find the answer to this and many other concerns, she started looking for books on adoption. She found plenty of books and materials on infant adoption but found nothing about toddler adoption.
So Hoppenhauer started to look for information anywhere she could get it – the Internet, friends, and on–line adoption support groups. Over time, she had gathered enough information to satisfy her needs and was ready to bring her first child home.
After finding all this information, Hoppenhauer decided to compile it into a book specifically about adopting toddlers, titled Adopting a Toddler, What Size Shoes Does She Wear? According to Hoppenhauer, it is the only childcare book on the market for people adopting children who are not infants.
Some of the information in this book and other tidbits about adoption were the topic of a free public seminar Hoppenhauer gave at Lexington Baptist Church on April 19.
