Dreher player and Naval Academy appointee named Athlete of the Year

Dreher High School senior football player, Curtis Sharp, has been named the Scholar–Athlete of the Year by the Midlands Chapter of the National Football Foundation. Curtis played wide receiver/ tight end for the Blue Devils. The presentation was made at the organization’s 11th Annual Awards Banquet Tuesday night at Seawell’s on Rosewood.
The Naval Academy appointee, who will play football for the Midshipmen, was selected for the honor from a field of 22 high school players from the Columbia area. Each was presented a plaque for his accomplishments in academics and athletics.
Sharp also was the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship, which because he will attend college on a full scholarship, will be presented in his name to Dreher’s general fund.
“I’m not sure I’ll make the Navy my career, but I am looking forward to attending school there, and playing football,” said Sharp, who plans to major in mechanical engineering.
According to Dreher Coach Bill Bacon, “Curtis is a great leader on the field and in the classroom. His teammates elected him team captain.”
Academically, Sharp has been on the honor roll every year. He is a member of the National Honor Society, a Coker College Scholar, and a member of Who’s Who Among American High School Students . His extracurricular activities include being treasurer of the student council, president of the Young Peoples’ Department of Brown Chapel A.M.E. Church since 2001, and a member of the Youth Leadership Council.
Sharp is a three–year letterman in basketball and track. He also earned All–Region and All–State football honors.
