Services for Ruth Knopf Chiles, 90, of Cayce, SC, were held at 11 am Thursday, April 14, 2005, in State Street Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Dr. Pete Cassidy, Rev. Earl Vaughn, and Rev. Bill Doverspike. Burial followed at Southland Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Trooper Chiles, Isaac Chiles, Weldon Fallaw, Hale Chiles, Rudy Matthews, and Rev. Rodolph Dixon. The family received friends from 6–9 pm Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home of West Columbia, SC. Memorials may be made to State Street Baptist Church, 1420 State St., Cayce, SC 29033.
Mrs. Chiles died Monday, April 11, 2005. Born in Fairfax, SC, she was the daughter of the late Isaac and Mozelle Gertrude Lancaster Knopf. Having lost her mother during her childhood, she was raised by her stepmother, Mrs. Maude Barber Knopf. A lifetime area resident, she was a graduate of Columbia College. In early years, Mrs. Chiles enjoyed entertaining church and civic groups with recitations and readings. She was a librarian at Cayce/West Columbia Library and later retired as librarian at Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School. Mrs. Chiles was a member of State Street Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and participated in mission trips domestically and to Peru. As an artist, she was very generous with her oil paintings.
Surviving are her sons and daughters–in–law: Walter Hale Chiles Jr. and wife Trisha of Moncks Corner, SC; and Paul Chiles and wife Emily of Ft. Mill, SC; grandchildren: Walter Hale Chiles III and wife Katie, Mary Belle Chiles, Rebecca Ruth Chiles, and Isaac Chiles; great grandchildren: Elizabeth Jane Chiles and Walter Hale “Trooper” Chiles, IV. Mrs. Chiles was preceded in death by sisters, Hazel Groseclose and Lorna Stone; and brother, Ben Knopf.
