The Community Mediation Center (CMC) would like to borrow artifacts and memorabilia to create a display illustrating the life and work of the late Rev. Dr. A. McKay Brabham Jr. In 2000 Brabham left a legacy of dedicated service rooted in faith and action.

CMC has established an new award in Brabham’s name, and he will be the first recipient. The life and work of the former preacher and editor will be memorialized during a May 5, 2005, ticketed barbecue dinner and silent auction to be held at Lynlee Hall, 2240 Bush River Road, Columbia. The display will be on view during the informal event.

CMC’s board of directors established the Building Bridges Award in Brabham’s name to recognize individuals who transcend personal and institutional divisions to make significant contributions in the lives and work of South Carolinians.

Members of Brabham’s family will accept the first award given by the non–profit organization whose mandate is to help individuals and organizations resolve conflict, improve relationships, and strengthen community.

Brabham, a Bamberg native who worked on the family farm, earned degrees from USC and Duke Divinity School. He joined the SC Conference of the Methodist Church in 1941 and following 20 years in the ministry served another decade as editor of the SC Methodist Advocate.

During this decade of societal change, 1961–71, Brabham elicited calls for activism through his editorials, proposing that listening could aid in desegregation and the achievement of equality.
