Cardinals, Falcons open week with soccer victories

The Cardinal Newman Cardinals and A.C. Flora Falcons continued to post impressive victories this week to fortify their SC High School Soccer Association rankings.

Cardinal Newman, ranked number one in the boys’ Class AAA SCISA standings, notched three goals from David Allen and two more apiece from brothers Matt and Thomas Winstead to pace the Cardinals in their 8–0 victory over Thomas Sumter.

Fritz Belinga picked up the other goal. Brennan Williams assisted with two goals while David Allen, Chris Giese, and Chris Scott each had one.

Cardinal Newman upped its record to 8–3–1.

Hammond (7–1–1) stands second behind Cardinal Newman in SCISA, while Ben Lippen (10–4) is third.

The Cardinal Newman girls (4–0) stand atop their category with Ben Lippen (8–2) at number three.

A.C. Flora logged a 5–0 whitewash of Lugoff– Elgin with scores coming from Conrad Petersen, Michael McCarthy, Phillip Walker, Alex Stevenson, and Sam Michael. Petersen added a pair of assists while Jordan Smith and Clark McCarthy had one each. Flora, the SC High School League’s number nine ranked boys’ team, improved to 10–5–1.

In other school positions, North Myrtle Beach heads up the list of SCHSL AAA boys. Other Columbia area teams in that group are number seven Dreher (7–1) and Brookland–Cayce (8–7–1).

Eastside (9–3) still leads number two Brookland–Cayce (11–3) in the girls’ AAA standings. Dreher (3–7) is number eight and A.C. Flora (4–3) is slotted at number 15.

The leaders in other classifications are Northwestern (13–0) leading the AAAA classification. Top ranked among Columbia area squads are Irmo (11–2) in fourth and Dutch Fork in fifth place (11–4–1). Spring Valley (12–5–1) is ninth while Ridge View (11–6) is number 15.

Topping the girls AAA standings is Fort Mill (13–1). Richland Northeast (8–1–1) holds sixth; Lexington (9–3) is seventh. Irmo (8–3) and Spring Valley (7–6) are numbers nine and ten respectively.
