Star Garden of the Week
Lush tropical plants guard the entrance to Satch Krantz’s garden, which is featured in the current issue of South Carolina Homes and Gardens Magazine
The private garden of Satch Krantz, the executive director of Riverbanks Zoo, is featured in the current issue of South Carolina Homes and Gardens Magazine.
When Krantz built his house in 1989, his idea of gardening involved no more than cutting grass. As his house took shape, he enlisted the help of Jim Martin, then the zoo’s horticulturalist, to landscape his yard.
Krantz started planting a few things, and in his words, “I got hooked! I had never gardened. It just sort of took over my life.”
His present garden is a joy to behold, with hedges, walkways, and whimsical statues interspersed among lush displays of gorgeous flowers and semi–tropical shrubs.
