Letter to the editor Stop taxing our property
The only solution to property tax relief is to repeal all property taxes, real and personal. The school boards, county councils, and city councils would not like this as they now have an unlimited money supply. The more they want, the more they take. They have a permanent unrecorded lien on your property. You will never own your property, even after it is paid off.
We need to
1. Repeal all property taxes, both real and personal.
2. Repeal all sales tax exemptions. For 2004-2005, SC would receive a $1.3 billion increase in revenue.
3. Raise sales tax by three cents on the dollar. This would bring an additional $2.4 billion in revenue.
4. Disband all local tax assessor’s and tax collection offices. This would reduce the budget by $300 million.
5. Make a constitutional amendment to do away with the property tax, whereby it can only be reinstated by a majority vote of the people of SC.
The total additional monies available would be $4 billion. Property taxes collected in the state, based on 2003 figures, were approximately $3.7 billion. This would give the state an additional $300 million. Schools funded by the state, instead of by county property taxes, will ensure equal monies to all students.
Do you want to permanently do away with all property taxes? The taxpayers should be allowed to vote on this.
We do not support any plan that lowers property taxes. They will come back.
We need a legislature made up of South Carolinians who want to make a change to stop this evil tax. We will be taxed out of our homes because property taxes will never go down. In 2003, approximately 22,000 pieces of property were sold at tax auctions. Property taxes need to be abolished and never be allowed to come back. We need legislators who will commit to doing away with property taxes.
