Charles Roman Jr.
COLUMBIA Graveside service for Charles Beauregard Roman Jr., 81, was held Friday, March 4, 2005, in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens. Memorials may be made to the SC Episcopal Home at Still Hopes, or Carolina Childrens Home. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, assisted the family.
Mr. Roman, husband of the late Leonora DuVal Roman, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Charles B. Roman, Sr. and Eleanor VanBenthuysen Roman. A Navy veteran of WWII, he attended USC. He worked for WIS–TV and Seibels Bruce and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.
Surviving are his children, Charles B. Roman III, Thomas Fleming Roman, Julie R. Bowers all of Columbia; brother, Rhett Roman of Litchfield Beach, S.C.; sister, Elizabeth Iseman of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and grandchildren.
Charles Mitchell
COLUMBIA Graveside service for Charles E. “Mitch” Mitchell, 94, was held Friday, March 4, 2005, in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, was in charge.
Mr. Mitchell, husband of the late Lois Brooks Mitchell, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005. Born in Taylor, Mississippi, he attended OLE Miss University, worked for the Atomic Energy Commission during WWII in Oakridge, Tenn., later moved to North Augusta, and worked in priorities at E.I. Dupont–Savannah River Plant. He was a homebuilder in Clearwater, Sc and then retired to Columbia, S.C.
Surviving are his daughter, Carlita (Leon) Horton of Columbia; five granddaughters, Jennifer Wilds, Lianne Watford, Vickie McAlister, Jane Milliken, and Tammy Tremblay; 14 great–grandchildren and six great great–grandchildren; and brother, Winfred O. Mitchell of Memphis, Tenn.
Minni Walker
COLUMBIA Minni Louise Walker, 100, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005.
Mrs. Walker was born and raised in Summerville, SC. She graduated from Summerville High School, and then earned a BA Degree in Education from USC in 1929. She taught school in small towns across South Carolina, and volunteered to help with adult illiteracy in SC. In the 1940’s she moved to Washington, D.C., where she taught English to Foreign Ambassadors and their families. In the 1960’s she moved to Manhattan and taught in public elementary schools until she retired in 1975. She remained in New York until 2000 when she returned to Columbia.
Surviving are her first cousin, Mary Virginia “Ginny” Wells Andrews of Columbia; and cousins, Jeanne Andrews Wright and Charles Andrews, II.

Don Powe
COLUMBIA William McDonald “Don” Powe died at home Tuesday, March 1, 2005. Mr. Powe was born in Eastover, son of the late Elise Haithcock Powe Berry and James Frederick Powe, Sr. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1953, attended Clemson College and USC. He joined the Marine Corps and served overseas in the Korean Conflict. He was employed by Pilot Life Insurance Company until 1981.
He is survived by his children, Anna Denby Perreyclear of Columbia, William McDonald Powe Jr. of Atlanta, and Heyward Singley Powe of Charlotte, NC; and six grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the charity of one’s choice.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
William Salisbury Jr.
SUMTER Graveside service for William L. Salisbury Jr., 81, was held Saturday, March 5, 2005 in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia, was in charge.
Mr. Salisbury died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Tuomey Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late William L. and Jimmie Sue Salisbury. An Army veteran of WW II, he was employed by the SCDepartment of Highways and Public Transportation for more than three decades, and was promoted to Sumter County Resident Construction Engineer.
Surviving are his brother and sister–in–law, Robert R. and Frances P. Salisbury of Columbia; niece, Lynn S. Salisbury and her husband, Alan Groleau; nephew, Robert L. Salisbury; and great–niece, Melissa F. Groleau.
Myrtle Sharpe
GASTON Service for Myrtle M. Sharpe, 83, was held Saturday, March 5, 2005, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens.
Mrs. Sharpe, wife of the late George Henry Sharpe, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin A. and Ruth McFarland McVey. She retired from the SC State Hospital and was a member of Advent Christian Church.
Surviving are children, Ruth Sharpe–Parfitt of Gaston, Dennis Sharpe of Gaston and Debbie Sharpe Joyner of Charleston; ten grandchildren; and 15 great–grandchildren.
Leota Kehoe
COLUMBIA Funeral Mass for Leota Hamlin Kehoe, 93, was celebrated Monday, March 7, 2005, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Farewell Prayers and Final Commendation in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church Senior Respite Ministries. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, was in charge.
Mrs. Kehoe, wife of the late John Peter Kehoe, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005. Born in Ira Township, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Louise Bloom Hamlin. In 1940 she moved to Columbia from St. Claire Shores, Mich. and was employed with John C.B. Smith Company. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Surviving are her brother, Alfred Hamlin of Algonac, Mich.; niece, Pat Diegel of Northville, Michigan. She was predeceased by her son, John Francis Kehoe.
Hector McLean
COLUMBIA Service for Hector McLean Jr., 63, was held Sunday, March 6, 2005 at First Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, was in charge.
Mr. McLean died Thursday, March 3, 2005. Born in Florence and raised in Bennettsville, he was the son of Pauline Proctor and the late Hector McLean, Sr. He was a 1963 graduate of Clemson University, and currently president of Hector McLean and Associates in partnership with Genie Matthews and Associates. He was a member of the Five Points Rotary, the Forest Lake Club, and First Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Connor McLean; son, Hector (Kristen) McLean, III of Greenville; his mother of Laurel Crest; sister, Elizabeth McLean Donovan of Charlotte, N.C.; niece,
Elizabeth McLean Donovan; and nephew, William Carpender Donovan.
Margaret Moore

Mrs. Moore died Saturday, March 05, 2005. Born in Bennettsville, she was a daughter of the late O. Vernon and Emma Poston Taylor. An avid bridge player, she belonged to several bridge clubs and was a life member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her daughter, Linda K. Trevathan Mauldin of Duluth, Ga.; grandchildren, Scott Davis and Jenny Mauldin of Atlanta, Ga. and Amy Mauldin and Riley Morton of Seattle, Wash.; great–grandchildren, Jacob and Anna Mauldin; and sister, Eleanor Elliott Helms.
Dorothy Cooper
WEST COLUMBIA Service for Dorothy Cooper, 83, was held Monday, March 7, 2005, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints, Whippoorwill Drive, with burial in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens, Columbia. Mrs. Cooper, wife of the late Bradley P. Cooper, died Friday, March 4, 2005. Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Wesley Fulton and Mary Louise Martin Player. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints.
Surviving are son, Brent Kirzerian of Salt Lake City, Utah; step–daughter, Sylvia Aaron; step–sons, Richard Daniel Cooper and Michael Cooper; and grandson, Scott E. Cooper, all of West Columbia. She was predeceased by her first husband, Eugene Karlos Kirzerian.
Henry Grossmann
COLUMBIA Henry E. Grossmann, 95, husband of the late Cleo W. Garner Grossmann, died Sunday, March 6, 2005. Born in Jersey City, N.J., he was a son of the late Rudolph Grossmann and Clara Schafbook. He retired from the Jersey City Police Department as a lieutenant. He was a fifty–year member of the Masonic Order and a member of the Police Benevolent Association.
Surviving are his son and daughter–in–law, Edward H. and Marcia Grossmann of Parlin, N.J.; brother, Michael Grossmann of Holmdel, N.J.; grandchildren; Christine Pota and her husband, Louis, of Little Silver, N.J., Brett Grossmann and his wife, Barbara, of Metuchen, N.J., and Cheryllee Schachel and her husband, James of Sayreville, N.J.; and great–grandchildren, Dustin Brett Grossmann, Cole Patrick Grossmann and Ryan Henry Schachel.

Born on Sept. 29, 2004, in Columbia, Xavier died Friday, March 4, 2005. He is survived by his mother; his father; sister, Dejah Robinson; grandparents, Mae Smith and Vernon McDaniel and Mary and James Moses; great–grandmother, Irene Holmes; aunt, Starr Moses; godparent, Loshonda Miller; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, all of West Columbia.
Shirley Barker
COLUMBIA Graveside service for Shirley Miller Barker, 63, was held Wednesday, March 9, 2005, in Olney Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Gastonia, N. C. Mrs. Barker died Sunday, March 06, 2005. Born in Florence, she was a daughter of the late J.B. Miller and Elizabeth Williams Miller Coward. She grew up in the High Hill Community near Lake City, and was in the mortgage banking industry.
Surviving are her husband, Bill R. Barker; brother, J.B. Miller, Jr. and his wife, Jean G. Miller of Aiken; sister, Verne Miller Buck–Friis and her husband, William “Bill” Buck–Friis of Fresno, Calif; sister–in–law, Sally Miller of Marietta, Ga.; 9 nieces and nephews; 13 great–nieces and nephews; and 2 great great–nieces.
Mary Garner Fitts

Mrs. Fitts died March 7, 2005. Born in Norcross, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late James Richard and Mary Lankford Garner. She was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Thomas Fitts; one son, C. Thomas (Sandy) Fitts, Jr., of Lugoff; one daughter, Sandra Fitts (Dr. William A.) Johnson of Columbia; grandchildren, Dr. Charles Thomas (Trey) Fitts III, Meredith Fitts Loudenback, Dr. Garner Johnson Wild, Dr. William Arnold (Will) Johnson, Jr., and Dr. Brandon Fitts Johnson; and four great–grandchildren.
