Grandmother

Sometimes, women learn body wisdom through the mouths of babes. Have you ever noticed that your grandchild may notice the menopausal changes in your body before you do? I wonder if my inner body wisdom is ready for the challenge. I know my vanity isn’t.

I was reading Little Red Riding Hood with my three adorable cherubs when I noticed six bulging eyes exploring my body parts in wonder. Perhaps it was the sweat dropping off my neck that intrigued them so, or my growling stomach noises, or the gray roots showing through my bouffant hair.

“Grandmother! What big, bright, long purple and blue veins you have all over your legs,” said Little Grandchild Number One.

“The bigger and longer to tie love knots to your heart, my dear,” Grandmother said. Forgive him, I prayed, for he does not know what he says.

“Grandmother! What long whiskers you have,” said Little Grandchild Number Two.

“The better to nuzzle my chin to your cheek, my dear,” Grandmother said. Forgive him, I prayed, he does not know what he says.

“Grandmother, what deep, dark wrinkles you have,” said Little Grandchild Number Three.

Grandmother snapped her fingers and her smile disappeared.

“Little Grandchild Number One! Bring my panty hose, the thick black ones that cover my varicose veins. Little Grandchild Number Two! Bring my tweezers, the heavy silver ones, to pluck out this facial hair!

And Little Grandchild Number Three, bring me the phone.” Forgive me, I prayed, I draw the line at wrinkles. “You are going home to mother.”

Inner body wisdom blessing: Love the children, but don’t be afraid to show your incisors. Send them home to Mama!
