Hours after developers made their re–development plans for the former SCETV site on Millwood Avenue public, minor modifications were announced at the Old Shandon Neighborhood Association meeting.

Developers Ben Arnold and David Bryant plan to incorporate the excavated level of the Millwood Avenue to Cypress Street site into below–grade parking entrances for the proposed townhouses that will anchor Shandon Square.

In addition to these 32 up–scale residential units, there will be seven live/work units whose street level entrances will be shops, boutiques, or service sector enterprises, but not restaurants.

To control traffic into the new development, access into the complex from Millwood Avenue will continue through to Cypress Street. That cut–through will likely become a one–way street.

The development team unveiled architectural renderings of a proposed complex during a regular meeting of the Old Shandon Neighborhood Association, estimating the project will cost $10 million.

The necessity for the existing 160–foot high cell phone tower to remain on the site inspired architects to design a clock tower that will aesthetically obscure the metal structure without compromising its function. With a flag fluttering from its pinnacle, that feature is expected to become an area landmark.

Before the project can commence, asbestos must and will be removed to SCDHEC specifications. Developers hope to begin construction before the end of 2005.

The aesthetics of the overall design of the project took inspiration from the century–old neighborhood it will be joining. Old Shandon, Columbia’s first suburb, was an early trolley stop at the turn of the last century. Old Shandon celebrated its centennial last summer.
