Dreher High School student’s essay wins DAR award
Dreher High School Senior Mary Elizabeth Ward presented her winning citizenship essay last Saturday at a luncheon meeting of the University Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
Ward’s essay, Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It , was chosen state winner. She will compete at the state–level Good Citizen Award ceremony March 19.
A special tribute was made to Chapter member Estelle Frierson for her sculpture of Lexington County’s first librarian, Edna Bedenbaugh. The bronze sculpture captures the spirit of Freedom of Information by depicting Bedenbaugh reading to three children who represent all the children of the county. The purpose of the sculpture is to show how one person can make a difference in the lives of many.

Another highlight of the annual luncheon was a personal testimony by Tamassee Development Director Jason Eller, once a resident of the DAR–supported school. A musical program was presented by members of the Jonathan Adams Chapter, Children of the American Revolution.
